Chris Hughton satisfied with local-based players’ performance in Liberia win

Black Stars coach Chris Hughton has lauded the performances of Medeama SC duo Jonathan Sowah and Fatawu Hamidu in Ghana’s 3-1 win over Liberia in an international friendly game.

Hamidu and Sowah became the first local-based players to play for Ghana under Chris Hughton as Ghana took on Liberia at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday.

Due to the unavailability of Baba Rahman and Gideon Mensah who were both ruled out due to injury, Hamidu received a late call-up, was named to the starting lineup and played the entire game.

Sowah made his way onto the field from the bench in the 80th minute and laid on a brilliant pass to Jordan Ayew who scored Ghana’s third goal in the 82nd minute.

In the post-match conference, Hughton expressed his admiration for the duo hinting at the possibility of inviting more local-based players due to their performances.

“I am very conscious of what any introduction into the camp from local players and that’s why I stay here for periods to watch as many games as I can here. I think both have done well particularly Jonathan (Sowah) coming on in the last minutes and giving the team a real lift in that period particularly when the game opens up.

“Really pleased for Hamidu as well to make his debut so I think probably, for them two, I think that’s great encouragement it’s a great encouragement for more of our local players want to aspire to.”

Ghana will now shift their attention to the forthcoming international friendly matches which come off in October against Mexico and the United States as they intensify preparations for the 2026 World Cup and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
